A hand-drawn study of a classical bust, built around ideas of protection, restraint, and quiet authority.

The image is transferred into the garment, then worked through pigment, washing, and heat so the drawing becomes part of the surface rather than sitting cleanly above it.

Variation emerges through process. Each piece carries shifts in density, fading, and placement that make it individually distinct.

Artwork

The original drawing is based on Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux’s Bacchante aux yeux baissés (Bacchante with Lowered Eyes), created around 1872.

Carpeaux developed numerous studies and variations around the dancers and Bacchante figures associated with his sculptural work. Here, the figure is notably restrained — the eyes lowered, the expression inward, the classical form softened by the floral garland across the head.

Rather than reproducing the sculpture literally, the image is reduced into light, shadow, and fragmented marks. Through sublimation, pigment, washing, and heat, portions of the figure dissolve into the garment surface.

The irregular edges, tonal shifts, fading, and variation are intentional.

Longevity

This garment is designed to live with you. With time and wear, the fabric softens and the surface evolves, developing character that deepens rather than fades. Over years of use, each piece becomes more distinctly its own.
